Dear Friends:
Thank you for your interest in my campaign for the Washington Supreme
Court, Position 1. I appreciate this opportunity to share a little
about the Court and how my career has prepared me to serve there.
The State Supreme Court decides the most important legal issues we face. Its
decisions directly affect us all -- our security, our liberty, our property,
our environment. The Court also has responsibility for how well
our justice system works.
For these reasons, it’s critical to elect candidates who have
proven their ability to address important and complex legal issues; who
have a demonstrated commitment to integrity in our public institutions;
and who have an unwavering belief in fairness and impartiality for all
who seek justice. These qualities define my professional life.
I have practiced law for 26 years, serving three Attorneys General. I
have represented the people of Washington in major cases before the United
States Supreme Court and the Washington Supreme Court on important issues,
including issues affecting women, children, consumers and public safety.
For example, before the United States Supreme Court, I was privileged
to successfully preserve Washington’s landmark law protecting our
citizens from sexually violent predators. I also was honored to
receive the State Bar Association’s highest award for my role before
the United States Supreme Court in a case that preserved access to civil
justice for Washington’s poor.
In the Washington Supreme Court, I successfully fought to uphold Initiative
773, a law enacted by the people to provide health care for our citizens. And
I preserved the Equal Opportunity Grant program that gives a modest grant
to needy college students to complete their educations, whether they
choose to attend a secular or sectarian institution.
I’ve worked hard to promote integrity in our public institutions. I
served as chief counsel to the State Auditor, helping to eliminate waste
and abuse in government. As Counsel to the Commission on Ethics
in Government, I played a major role in writing Washington’s law
that holds public officials to high ethical standards. And I chaired
the Professional Conduct Committee of the State Bar Association, helping
lawyers understand and meet their ethical obligations.
Finally, and to me most importantly, I have an unwavering belief in
impartiality and fairness for all persons who come before the courts. These
values are dear to me.
If you honor me with your vote, I will honor you with excellence,
integrity and independence on the Washington Supreme Court.
Sincerely,
Maureen Hart
